About this deal

Using this menu you can discover and pair devices that use Bluetooth wireless technology, and start to use them with the TV. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then start the device discovery. A list of available Bluetooth devices will be displayed. Select the device you want to connect from the list, and press the OK button to pair the device. If the TV is missing some channels, we would recommend carrying out an automatic channel scan to tune in these channels, and if necessary trying a First Time Installation or Factory Reset through the menu. Colour accuracy is not as impressive when viewing HDR either, particularly when colours become more saturated. Blues are reproduced rather well but intense greens, reds and cyan have a tendency to look unnatural. Whites also suffer from clipping in bright scenes. While viewing a popular test image of mountains and moving clouds, the clouds looked undefined and it was a similar story in darker scenes, with the UL21 unable to articulate fine details with clarity. The Toshiba UK31 is well served with streaming services. Freeview Play guarantees a full complement of mainstream catch-up players (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5, UKTV Play and sundries), plus an extensive collection of box sets. The UL21’s plastic frame gives away the fact it’s a budget option, but it isn’t a terrible looking TV by any means. The 43in model measures 967 x 78 x 565mm (WDH) without its feet, which slot in at either end of the panel and add a further 154mm to the set’s depth, while elevating it by 50mm.

The UK31 is a solid value TV buy, offering a tempting combo of 4K bright room performance and smart functionality. It won’t win any beauty prizes and doesn’t have Disney+ but if you want an all-rounder with an admirable Game performance, it’s difficult to beat for the cash. If ‘Device connected’ message is displayed, then the pairing was successful. If the connection fails, retry. Note: When the LED indicator blinks blue, your remote is paired successfully. If it's not paired, press the Home button for 10 seconds. The Toshiba UK31 is an above-average budget TV that manages to combine a decent level of performance with sensible streaming service support as well as Alexa smart functionality. Apps From the latest movies and trending music to your favourite boxsets, we've got it all. The top streaming apps including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and Freeview Play built in as standard up to date and ready to go. Alexa Built-in With an Alexa microphone embedded into the bezel, you can explore more of what you love whether it’s getting the latest news and sports results, or even just simple commands like changing the volume without having to search for the remote, simply ask Alexa. The set’s upscaling is quite effective: standard definition DVD footage looks reassuringly smooth, with jaggies on diagonals smoothed out, while HD Blu-ray content is pixel dense, mapped to 2160p. To access Freeview channels, the TV will need to be tuned into a digital aerial. Connecting the TV to the internet will allow you to access the SMART features and applications on the TV, but not the full channel list.

The UL21 uses the Toshiba Smart Portal operating system. It’s relatively basic compared to leading platforms like webOS and Google TV, but the interface is straightforward and easy to navigate. If multiple variations of your router appear in the network selection screen, select the one which does not have 5GHz at the end. This message will show when the TV is not receiving a signal, either through the aerial or an external device connected if you have selected an input source but a device is not providing a signal. To test the Toshiba UL21 we used Portrait Displays Calman colour calibration software. Toshiba UL21 review: Sound qualityWeb Widget offers pre-built API functionality for cookie consent; see here: Web Widget Cookie Permission in Developer Center As is the case for SDR content, the Cinema mode is the most colour accurate of the five non-Dolby options, but not the brightest. I measured peak brightness in that mode at 334cd/m² on a 10% white window, while Natural mode returned a peak figure of 376cd/m² in the same conditions. Both are good scores, though they don’t translate to jaw-dropping HDR images, which is to be expected given how affordable the UL21 is. HDR picture performance is about right for this calibre of set. I measured HDR peak brightness, using a standard 10 per cent window, at 400 nits.
