About this deal

Thanks for the interesting replies so far. I’m still hoping someone will come in and masterfully clear up everything about what’s in some of these different pencils. First, JD and I work in completely different ways. JD’s work is more planned and controlled, such as using frisket to blank out selected areas. That requires a very accurate initial drawing that probably cannot be readily altered during the drawing process. However, I love working in graphite because it offers that direct mind-to-hand-to-paper connection – you think, you draw. So I begin with a very loose set of guidelines (except where accuracy is vital) and I constantly alter or even ignore them as I draw each section. I also begin top left and work down to the bottom right-hand corner (as a generalisation). Nothing is blanked out. “A String of Memories” by JD Hillberry

First, a little history: The Staedtler Mars Lumograph brand dates from 1931 and the lead’s slightly waxy composition was formulated for the creation of graphite drawings that could be printed from without the need for inking. Over time this formulation replaced the plain Mars leads. The pen’s stylus pointer responds to touch screens, including smartphones, tablets, GPS navigators, and so on. This is convenient if you don’t want to get fingerprints on your phone or if you don’t want to take off your gloves on those nippy winter days. PenWhether they’re watercolour, wax, or even liquid, there are all sorts of types of pencils that your customers may be using at work and for their art. This is by no means a comprehensive list of pencil types, and there are many different pencils that you can give your customers as promotional products. No matter what your industry, you’re guaranteed to be able to find a pencil type that works for your company, your brand and your style. Many companies use pencils in their promotional giveaways, but do you know how many pencil types there are? The truth is, there are hundreds of different pencil types used in all sorts of different industries. Artists, carpenters, students, accountants and more use different types of pencils every day. Read on and learn more about the different types of pencils that your customers may be using. What Is a Pencil?

Hi folks. I’m new here, and this is my first post (so no links even though I allude to some info I’ve found out there). I’m been inspired to join and seek your wisdom by the purest nerdery, but it is a practical issue. Without buying and trying out every carbon and charcoal pencil ever made, can we use our collective wisdom to give a better account of their natures and differences than the manufacturers are ever going to provide in their marketing blurbs? OTHER STUFF. Clay, wax, oil, other binders, etc. In general there seems to be a dry-to-oily spectrum, but some pencils (Primo, Ritmo, Pierre noire) seem to be described as offering smooth-but-dry writing, so that I’m left wondering if this is not a simple binary. Maybe smoothness-vs.-scratchniess is different from dry-vs.-oily. Fineness of blend would seem to be a factor. Let me throw out some of what I think I know already, so maybe you can see why I would like to try to improve and straighten my understanding: Bauer Consumer Media Ltd, Company number 01176085; Bauer Radio Limited, Company number: 1394141; Registered office: Media House, Peterborough Business Park, Lynch Wood, Peterborough PE2 6EA and H Bauer Publishing, Company number: LP003328; Registered office: The Lantern, 75 Hampstead Road, London NW1 2PL

I draw with graphite mechanical pencils and I have the same thoughts you are asking, what are all those different names and brands of charcoal, carbon, whatever? Of course we do care most about the marks our pencils make, so I’d also like to canvass the hive mind for insights about how the different pencils’ marks can be removed (or not) and can be mixed/blended/smudged— by fingers, by water, by eraser, by cotton cloth, etc. And shininess-vs.-matteness is an important category. To create carbon fiber, thousands of strands of super-thin carbon are wound into a yarn. The yarn is woven into a sheet, which can then be molded into various shapes depending on the application. The weave reflects light in unpredictable ways, creating a fantastic mirage-like effect. This phenomenon is especially prominent when you rotate a carbon fiber pen. Some pencils can be confirmed to be oil-based: Pitt oil-base, Cretacolor Nero (manufacturer: “shiny…smudge proof…oil-based and therefore water-resistant”). It’s descriptions like “smudgy, just not dusty” that confuse me. Where to draw the line between not-dusty-not-smudgy and not-dusty-but-smudgy? One source says Pitt oil-base “semi-erases”: where does it actually fall on a spectrum? What’s less eraseable?

Weight varies among carbon fiber pens. Most carbon fiber pens, such as the Monteverde Engage One Touch Retractable Rollerball Pen, have a carbon fiber finish. The finish lays upon another material, such as aluminum or stainless steel. The underlying material determines the weight. For example, an aluminum body is lighter than a brass body. Some pens, such as Tombow Zoom 101 Carbon Fiber Fountain Pen, have a predominantly carbon fiber body. The carbon fiber is the main structural component of the pen. Pens with carbon fiber bodies definitely weigh less than pens that only have a carbon fiber finish. I think it’s good for artists to understand their materials, so I want if possible to arrive at reliable facts about the pencils’ composition, in addition to discussing the properties of the marks they make. Before we look at the best you can buy, let's look at the basics when it comes to types of drawing pencils. What's the pencil hardness scale?

Talent is really a capacity for a certain type of learning of knowledge and a consuming interest in the facts that contribute to that knowledge~ Andrew Loomis Also called ‘woodless pencils’, these pencils are entirely made of graphite without the wooden exterior. These pencils are often used by artists for sketches and drawings. Because they have more writing surface area, they are excellent for shading in pencil drawings. Liquid Pencils The ultimate goal would be to classify the pencils by composition correctly enough that we could generalize which of our pencil categories make/remove marks in which ways. (For example, I’m guessing “shininess” basically means “oil-based”?) I’m not sure about Conte’s other pencils. They seem to have difficulty distinguishing their products. The pencils I am familiar with are basically the crayons in pencil form. One of the most common pencil types is the graphite pencil, which is a pencil made with wood or a similar soft material around a graphite core. These pencils are used in schools and hospitals, for promotions and so much more. These pencils previously had lead cores, but when lead was discovered to be a health hazard, graphite became the new standard. Some people will still refer to the core of a pencil as the ‘pencil lead’ even though the pencil uses graphite. Solid Graphite Pencils
